VMware vCenter 5.1 Server Installation Process step by step

In this post, I will show  you step by step process for installing the VMware vCenter 5.1 Server. We can install the vCenter Server on physical machine or virtual machine with access to a supported database. But, here I am going to install the vCenter Server 5.1 on VMware Workstation virtual machine. We have to make sure the vCenter Server machine must meet the minimum hardware requirements.

First, download the vCenter Server 5.1 setup from VMware www.vmware.com. Please find the below link for download the setup.

dowloadWhen you launched the vCenter Server setup, you will have different vCenter server components in setup. They are

  • vCenter Single Sign On
  • vCenter Inventory Service
  • vCenter Server
  • vSphere Client
  • vSphere Web Client
  • vSphere Update Manager

We can install vCenter Single Sign on, Inventory Service and vCenter Server on the same machine as with vCenter Simple Install or on different machines. Here, I am going to install on same machine one by one.

vCenter Single Sign On Minimum Hardware Requirement:

Processor:  2 CPU with a speed of 2 GHz (Intel or AMD x64 processor)

Memory: 4 GB ( If vCenter Single Sign On and Database runs on same machine as vCenter Server)

Disk Space:  2 GB ( If vCenter Single Sign On and Database runs on same machine as vCenter Server)

Database:  Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express runs on same machine with vCenter Server

Network: 1 Gbps

After launching the vCenter Server setup, select the vCenter Single Sign On and click install to begin the installation

Select language English(United States) and click OK3

To continue the installation, click Next5

Read the following End User Patent Agreement and click Next6

I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next7

Provide password for admin@System-Domain, the password must have at least eight characters, at least one lower case character, one uppercase character, one number, and one special character.8

Select Install a local Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express instance and click Next9

Provide FQDN or IP address of vCenter Server and click Next10

Make sure FQDN should be resolved with nslookup, ignore warning click ok11

check the box  Use network service account and click Next12

Select the Destination folder and click Next13

verify the vCenter Single Sign On port settings and click Next14

Click Install to begin the Installation15

vCenter Inventory Service Minimum Hardware Requirement:

Processor:  2 CPU with a speed of 2 GHz (Intel or AMD x64 processor)

Memory:  4 GB (If vCenter Inventory Service runs on same machine as vCenter Server)

Disk Space:  60 GB (If vCenter Inventory Service runs on same machine as vCenter Server).

Network: 1 Gbps

After installing vCenter Single Sign On, select vCenter Inventory Service and click Install21

Select language English(United States) and click OK22

To continue the installation, click Next24

Read the End User Patent Agreement and click Next25

I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next26

Select the Destination folder and click Next27

Provide Fully Qualified Domain Name and click Next28

Make sure FQDN should be resolved with nslookup, ignore warning click Ok29

verify the Inventory Service port numbers and click Next30

Select Inventory Size Small and click Next31

Provide vCenter Single Sign On administrator password and click Next32

click Install certificates for Secure Connection33

Click Install to begin the installation34

Click Finish to exit the wizard36

 vCenter Server Minimum Hardware Requirement:

Processor:  2 CPU with a speed of 2 GHz (Intel or AMD x64 processor)

Memory:   4 GB memory for basic installation

  • If vCenter Server is installed on a different host machine than vCenter Single Sign On and vCenter Inventory Service, 4 GB of RAM are required.
  • If vCenter Server, vCenter Single Sign On and vCenter Inventory Service are installed on the same host machine (as with vCenter Simple Install), 10 GB of RAM are required.

 Disk Space:  60 GB space for basic installation

  • If vCenter Server is installed on a different host machine than vCenter Single Sign On and vCenter Inventory Service, 4 GB are required.
  • If vCenter Server, vCenter Single Sign On and vCenter Inventory Service are installed on the same host machine (as with vCenter Simple Install), at least 40-60 GB of free disk space are required after installation, depending on the size of your inventory. 100 GB are recommended, to allow for future growth of your inventory.

Database:  Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express runs on same machine with vCenter Server

Network: 1 Gbps

After installing vCenter Inventory Services, select vCenter Server and click Install37

Select the language English(United States) and click OK38

If you have License key, enter key here and click Next44

Select Install a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express instance and click Next45

Check the box, Use SYSTEM Account and click Next46

Make sure FQDN should be resolved with nslookup,ignore warning and click OK47

Select Create a standalone VMware vCenter Server instance and click Next48

Verify the VMware vCenter Server port connection and click Next49

Select  Inventory Size is Small and click Next50

Provide vCenter Single Sign On Administrator password and click Next51

keep it default and click Next52

Enter vCenter Inventory Service URL and click Next53

Select the Destination folder and click Next54

VMware vSphere Client Minimum Hardware Requirement:

Processor:  1 CPU with a speed of 1 GHz (Intel or AMD x64 processor)

Memory:   1 GB recommended

Disk Space:  1.5 GB free disk space for complete installation

Network: 1 Gbps

After installing the vCenter Server, select vSphere Client and click install

vSphere Web Client Minimum Hardware Requirement:

Processor:  2 CPU with a speed of 2 GHz (Intel or AMD x64 processor)

Memory:   2 GB (If vSphere Web Client runs on same machine as vCenter Server)

Disk Space:  2 GB free disk space (If vSphere Web Client runs on same machine as vCenter Server)

Network: 1 Gbps

VMware vSphere Client & Web Client Software Requirements:

We have to make sure that operating system supports the vSphere Client. The vSphere Client requires the Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 Framework. If it is not installed on your system, the vSphere Client installer installs it. The .NET 3.5 SP1 installations might require Internet connectivity to download more files.

The following browsers are supported for version 5.1 of the vSphere Web Client:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, 8, and 9.
  • Mozilla Firefox 3.6 and later.
  • Google Chrome 14 and later.

The vSphere Web Client requires the Adobe Flash Player version 11.1.0 or later to be installed with the appropriate plug-in for your browser.

After installing vSphere Client, select vSphere Web Client and click Nextwebclient-installation

Select the language English(United States) and click OK70

vSphere Update Manager Minimum Hardware Requirement:

Processor:  2 CPU with a speed of 2 GHz (Intel or AMD x64 processor)

Memory:   4 GB (If vSphere Update Manager runs on same machine as vCenter Server)

Disk Space:  60 GB (If vSphere Update Manager runs on same machine as vCenter Server)

Database:  Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express runs on same machine with vCenter Server

Network: 1 Gbps

After installing vSphere Web Client, select vSphere Update Manager and click Next81

Select the language English(United States) and click OK82

Check the box download updates from default sources immediately after installation and click Next88

Enter Administrator and password, click Next89

Select Install a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express instance and click Next90

Verify vSphere Update Manager Port Settings and click Next91

Open vSphere Client, enter IP address or Name and check the box Use Windows session credentials97

Click Ignore to continue using the current SSL certificate98

After login the vCenter Server, select Plug-ins and click Manage Plug-ins100

Select VMware vSphere Update Manager in Available Plug-ins and click download 101

Its Security Warning, click Run 102

Verify VMware vSphere Update Manager Client is Enabled and click Close 110

click Home tab to check VMware vSphere Update Manager  111

Verify Solutions ans Applications,the vSphere Update Manager is available and click Update Manager 112
