How to upgrade vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 to vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 step by step process

With release of VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 build number 4602587.  We can upgrade the vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 or 6.0 and the Platform Services Controller Appliance 6.0 to version 6.5. In this post, I will show you upgrade vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 to vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 step by step process. Upgrade of vCenter Server Appliance or Platform Services Controller is migrating of old version to new version, which includes deploying a new appliance of version 6.5. During upgrade, we have to assign a temporary IP address to the new appliance which helps the configuration and services data migration from old appliance to newly deployed appliance. After the migration, the IP address and host name of old appliance are applied to new upgraded appliance of version 6.5. At the end of upgrade, the temporary IP address is released and old appliance is power off.

Before going to upgrade vCenter Server Appliance 6.0, we make sure minimum hardware requirement must meet before upgrade to vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 it depends on your vSphere environment size.

Hardware Requirements for a vCenter Server Appliance with an Embedded or External Platform Services Controller:

vSphere Web Client Software Requirements:

Make sure that your browser supports the vSphere Web Client. The vSphere Web Client 6.5 requires Adobe Flash Player 16 or later. The following supported guest operating systems and browser versions for the vSphere Web Client.

Before going to begin the upgrade, we have to connect ESXi host using vSphere Client1

Click Ignore to continue using the current SSL certificate2

Select vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 and right click select Open Console3

Verify the memory on vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 is 8GB. If you upgrade to vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 the minimum memory required is 10GB.4

Shutdown the vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 and increased the memory to 10GB5

First, download the vCenter Server Appliance ISO from VMware web site. After download, mount the ISO image to machine and open the vCenter Server Appliance Setup and click vcsa-ui-installer6

After open win32 folder, click installer to launch the vCenter Server Appliance installer8

click Upgrade to begin Upgradation9

The vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 consists of  2 Upgrade Stages, they are

  1. Deploy vCenter Server Appliance 6.5
  2. Configure vCenter Server Appliance 6.5

Upgrade – Stage 1: Deploying vCenter Server Appliance 6.5

To deploy appliance, click Next10

Select I accept the terms of license agreements and click Next11

Enter vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 FQDN or IP address, SSO passwordAppliance root password and also ESXi host, User name and password that manage vCenter Server Appliance 6.0. then click Next12

To accept and continue, click Yes13

Enter target settings details,The target is ESXi host or vCenter Server instance on which the vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 will be deploy.14

To accept and continue, click Yes15

Enter vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 name, Root password and Confirm root password. then click Next16

Select Deployment size and Storage size, then click Next18

Select Storage location and Enable Thin Disk Mode, then click Next19

Select IP version, IP assignment and Enter Temporary IP address, Subnet mask, Default gateway and DNS Servers details, then click Next20

Review the settings before deploy and click Finish21

Connect the target ESXi host where vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 is deploy23

Deploy vCenter Server with an Embedded Platform Services Controller is in progress25

Deploy vCenter Server with an Embedded Platform Services Controller is successfully and click Continue 27

Upgrade – Stage 2: Configuring vCenter Server Appliance 6.5

To setup vCenter Server Appliance with an Embedded PSC, click Next28

Pre-upgrade checks are in progress29

Select upgrade data and click Next30

Its optional, select join the VMware Customer Experience improvement program and click Next31

Review the settings, select I have backed up the source vCenter Server and all the required data from the database and click Finish32

The source vCenter will be shutdown once the network configuration is enabled on destination vCenter Server and click OK to continue the installation33

Login to vSphere Client and  verify source vCenter Server Appliance 6.0  is shutdown 37

Upgrade is being installed34

Copy data from source vCenter Server to target vCenter Server is in progress36

Set up target vCenter Server and start services is in progress38

Import copied data to target vCenter Server is in progress39

Data transfer and appliance setup has been completed successfully and click vSphere Web Client link41

Click Continue to this website (not recommended)42

Click Allow this website to open a program on your computer43

Enter vCenter Single Sign On User name (administrator@vpshere.local) and password, click login44

After login vSphere Web Client, verify all the options in vSphere Web Client45

Login to vSphere client, select vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 and right click select open console47

Verify the vCenter Server with an embedded Platform Services Controller console48          I had upgraded and configured  vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 from vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 successfully.
