How to Migrate the Windows based vCenter Server 5.5 to vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 Update 2m


VMware announce the release of vSphere 6.0 Update 2m is an automated end to end migration tool from a Windows vCenter Server 5.5 to a vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 Update 2.This release is specifically targeted for customers who are interested in migrating from their current production Windows vCenter Server on 5.5 (any update) to a vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 Update 2.  If you are running vSphere 5.0 or 5.1, upgrade to vSphere 5.5 is required before migrating. This migration tool fully supported for migrating the both physical and virtual vCenter Server 5.5. We can migrate a vCenter Server instance with an embedded vCenter Single Sign-On to a vCenter Server Appliance with an embedded Platform Services Controller appliance.

When we migrate from vCenter Server with an embedded vCenter Single Sign-On (version 5.5) on Windows to vCenter Server Appliance with an embedded Platform Services Controller appliance, the entire installation is migrated at the same time.

If vCenter Inventory ServicevSphere Web Client, vSphere Auto Deploy, or vSphere ESXi Dump Collector are installed on a different machine than the source vCenter Server with an embedded vCenter Single Sign-On, these components are migrated to the target vCenter Server Appliance.

                            Before going to start the migration, we have to download the vCenter migration tool for 6.0 from VMware website and mount the ISO image to Windows vCenter Server 5.5 machine.

Right click select the Open

Select  migration-assistant 

Before going to migrate, we have to run VMware-Migration-Assistant on the vCenter Server 5.5

Provide Administrator@vsphere.local password and press enter

Here, its extracting the migration assistant scripts and do not close this console until the migration is completedDuring the migration Windows vCenter Server 5.5 machine will goes shutdown.To avoid failures in the middle of migration mount the vCenter Server Appliance ISO image to different machine than vCenter Server 5.5 and start migration. Select VCSA

Double click to install VMware-ClientIntegrationplugin-6.0.0

Click Next to continue installation

Select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next

Click Install to install the Plug-in

Installing the Plug-in is in progress

Click Finish to exit the wizard

Select vcsa-setup to start the migration

Click Allow 

Select Migrate

Continue migrating to vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 click Ok

Select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next

Enter ESXi Host or vCenter Server FQDN or IP Address, User name , Password and click Next

To accept and continue, press Yes

Enter vCenter Server Appliance name, root password and confirm OS password, click Next

Provide Source Windows vCenter Server, Migration Assistant port, SSO password and click Next

To accept and continue, press Yes

Enter AD User name and password, then click Next

Select Tiny (Up to 10 hosts, 100 VMs) and click Next

Select storage having free space more than 120 GB and select Enable Thin Disk Mode and click Next

Choose a Temporary network, IP address family, Network type, Network address, System name( FQDN or IP address), Subnet mask, Network gateway and  Network DNS Servers  details

Check Join the VMware Customer Experience Improvement Program and click Next

Review all settings before starting the migration and click Finish

Downloading and deploying appliance is in progress

Go to Windows vCenter Server 5.5, Login to the server and verify the vCenter Server appliance machine as been created on ESXi Host

Powering on appliance is in progress

Verify in vCenter Server 5.5, the vCenter Server Appliance has been powered on

Configuring the vCenter Server Appliance is in progress

Configuring appliance is completed.

Now, Windows vCenter Server has been shutdown completely 

Connect the ESXi Host through vSphere Client to verify the vCenter Server Appliance status

Select vcenterappliance and right click select Open Console

Verify the console Windows vCenter Server has been migrated to vCenter Server Appliance with an embedded Platform Services Controller successfully.

Migration completed, login to vSphere Web Client by clicking the URL

Login to vSphere Web Client with vCenter SSO User administrator@vsphere.local and password

Verify all the options in vSphere Web Client 

Connect the vCenter Server Appliance with vSphere client and enter vCenter IP address or FQDN,Username and password, then click Login
