How to reconfiguring and repointing the vCenter Server with Embedded Platform Services Controller to External Platform Services Controller

In previous post, I had shown you the installation of vCenter Server 6.0 with Embedded Platform Services ControllerNow, In this post, I will show you how to reconfigure and repoint the vCenter Server with Embedded Platform Services Controller to External Platform Services Controller step by step. In my lab environment I had build vCenter Server 6.0 with Embedded Platform Services Controller for test purpose. But recommended for production environment we have to build vCenter Server 6.0 with External Platform Services Controller.

vCenter Server and the Platform Services Controller are deployed on a single virtual machine or physical server.

vCenter Server with an embedded Platform Services Controller installed on the same virtual machine or physical server.

vCenter Server and the Platform Services Controller are deployed on separate virtual machine or physical server. The Platform Services Controller can be shared across several vCenter Server instances. You can install a Platform Services Controller and then install several vCenter Server instances and register them with the Platform Services Controller. You can then install another Platform Services Controller, configure it to replicate data with the first Platform Services Controller, and then install vCenter Server instances and register them with the second Platform Services Controller.

The Platform Services Controller is installed on one virtual machine or physical host and the vCenter Server instances registered with that Platform Services Controller are installed on other virtual machines or physical hosts.
Before going to reconfigure and repoint the vCenter Server with Embedded Platform Services Controller, we have to build the VMware Platform Services Controller in separate machine.
Installations of VMware Platform Services Controller:

Open vSphere Client enter the vCenter FQDN or IP address, User name and Password and click Login

Select vcenterappliance, right click select Open Console

Verify the vCenter Server Appliance is deployed as vCenter Server with an Embedded Platform Services Controller.

Download the vCenter Server Appliance installer, and mount ISO image to CD/DVD and open the vCenter Server Appliance Setup, then click VCSA

click VMware-Client-integration-Plugin-6.0.0 to install

Preparing VMware Client Integration Plugin 6.0 for installation

To continue installation, click Next

Select I accept the terms in the License Agreement and click Next

Select Destination Folder and click Next

Click Install to begin the installation

Installing the Plug-in is in progress

Click Finish to exit the wizardclick vcsa setup to start installation14

click Allow this website to open an app on your computer15

Again, click Allow this website using the Client Integration Plug-in16

Click Install to begin installation of vCenter Server Appliance 6.017

Select I accept the terms of the License Agreement and click Next18

Enter ESXi Host or vCenter Server FQDN or IP Address, User name , Password and click Next19

To accept and continue, press Yes

Enter Platform Service Controller name, root password and confirm OS password, click Next

Select Install Platform Services Controller and click Next

Select Join an SSO domain in an existing vCenter 6.0 platform services controller  and enter existing vCenter Server IP address, vCenter SSO Password and click Next

Select Join an existing site and click Next

Verify the Appliance size and click Next

Select storage having free space more than 120 GB and select Enable Thin Disk Mode and click Next

Choose a network, IP address family, Network type, Network address, System name( FQDN or IP address), Subnet mask, Network gateway and  Network DNS Servers details

Select Join the VMware Customer Experience Improvement Program and click Next

Review all settings before starting the installation and click Finish

Downloading and deploying appliance is in progress

Connect the vCenter Server through vSphere Client and verify the psc-appliance machine has been created

Powering on appliance is in progress

psc-appliance has been powered on the ESXi Host

Platform Services Controller installation is in progress

Platform Services Controller installation has been completed and click Close

Select psc-appliance and right click select Open Console

Verify the console VMware Platform Services Controller is installed successfully

Open the putty to connect the vCenter Server, provide vCenter Server name and click Open

Click Yes to connect

Enter root and password, press enter

Enable BASH access by enter command “shell.set –enabled True” and enter “shell”, press enter

Enter this command  ” cmsso-util reconfigure –repoint-psc <FQDN-of-External-PSC> –username <SSO-DomainAdmin> –domain-name <SSO-Domain> –passwd <SSO-DomainAdmin-Password>”

#cmsso-util reconfigure -–repoint-psc psc-appliance.virtualinfograce.com -–username administrator -–domain-name vsphere.local -–passwd Vmware@123

Once executed the command it will show the status message as “The vCenter Server has been successfully reconfigured and repointed to the external Platform Services Controller psc-appliance.virtualinfograce.com” and reboot the Platform Services Controller to changes take effect.

Open vSphere Client, enter the vCenter FQDN or IP address, User name and Password and click Login

Select psc-appliance and right click select Open Console

      Verify the console vCenter Server with an Embedded Platform Services Controller has been reconfigured and repointed successfully as vCenter Server with an External Platform Services Controller. Thats it, I hope this is informative for you.
